I’m super guilty of not getting in front of the camera, so for my Mother’s Day gift I asked for a photoshoot with my children. I ended up setting everything up in the studio and posing my husband where I was going to sit, then set up the lighting and camera, we then swapped places and he took the image – he now claims he’s the talented photographer in the family.
I also realised, that I didn’t have one professional picture of us as a family of 4! I’d had some done with my first child but after my second baby, life got a bit more crazy busy.
After being made redundant at 36 weeks pregnant, I decided I’d carry on being a photographer, but I would be my own boss. As you can imaging setting up and training took a lot of time, along with the normal family life craziness.
So, now our youngest is 4 years old and I hadn’t got a professional photo of the 4 of us all together.
In the summer we decided to team up with a fellow work colleague and friend Emma Attwood, from Emma Atwood Photography and do a family portrait swap. She photographed my family and I did hers.
We decided to have something a little different to our normal style in the studio and went to the local confetti fields as a backdrop. It was super-hot and very busy, not really the ideal combination, but we got a few nice pictures.
Now all that is left to do is print them out!! We live in a world where everything is on our computers or phones and don’t use the images to display on the walls or in photobooks. So my next promise to myself is to get it printed and framed to hang in pride of place in the living-room.
As a woman, I’m never happy with the way I look. However, in years to come my children won’t care what I looked like, because I’m their mum and nothing else matters but the bond and love between us – and my aim is to capture this in beautiful portraits each year, so that is reminds us of that bond forever.
